Jackie Robinson, a great baseball player, was not among the top three players in the Negro Leagues, but Branch Rickey chose Robinson for his ability to keep his calm. But Rickey should have chosen one of the best players even though none of them would have remained calm when faced with racial hostility.

Before Jackie Robinson entered the Major Leagues, famous Negro League pitcher Satchel Paige had pitched successfully against white players in exhibition games, and was actually one of the highest paid players white or black of his time due to his service time in leagues outside of the country.
