There was suspicion that Mark McGwire was using steroids the season he broke the single season home run record in Major League Baseball, but questions were not seriously raised about the issue until a few years after he retired. There was also suspicion that Barry Bonds used steroids when he broke McGwire's record a few years later, but more public criticism and issues were raised much sooner than in McGwire's case, and have thus tarnished a Hall of Fame caliber player's career forever.
